Sexual dimorphism can be seen in some stag beetles (Coleoptera: Lucanidae) . Male stag beetles have highly variable and impressive mandibles used for aggressive fightings to obtain food, territory and mates. Different stag beetle species may have specific fighting behaviors and fighting routes. We investigated the variation in fighting behavior of Rhaetulus crenatus crenatus and Cyclommatus mniszechi. Conspecific staged fighting trials were conducted in laboratory environment. Rhaetulus crenatus crenatus has 11 different behavior stages while C. mniszechi has 12. The 9 fighting stages of Initiation (I), Walking (W), Approach (A), Encounter (E), Clamp (C), Flip (F), Stand still (S), Pursue (U), and Retreat (R) were observed in both stag beetles. However, Provoke (Pr) and Push (Pu) are unique behaviors seen in R. crenatus crenatus. Body raising (B), Tussle (T) and Pressure (Pr) were found only in C. mniszechi. Fighting behavioral differences between these two stag beetles also lead to differences in fighting routes. During the stage of Push(Pu), Tussle (T), and Pressure (Pr), these two stag beetles have the closest physical contact with each other. At this stages, the two species place their front legs in different positions. Substantial differences in front tibia structure can be observed. There were two well-developed and immovable spins on the outer apex of the front tibia of R. crenatus crenatus while C. mniszechi only has one. We hypothesize that there is a correlation between structural differences of the tibia and fighting styles in stag beetles.
