Layawan River of Mt. Malindang in Mindanao Island

Taxonomy of aquatic insects in the Philippines has received little attention over the years in spite of considerable diverse fauna. Since perlid stoneflies are among the first aquatic macroinvertebrates to disappear when the environment is disturbed by either natural or anthropogenic activities, as well as indicator taxa to assess ecological condition of streams and riparian ecosystem, this research project studies on the taxonomy of Plecoptera in Mount Malindang, Mindanao Island. The study includes the exploration of new species including from the genera Neoperla and Phanoperla of the family Perlidae, and to understand the role of species variation based from its phenotypic and genetic diversity.
